The SMC encompasses Potong Pasir, Lorong 8 Toa Payoh and Tannery. The constituency has existed since 1968. The People's Action Party's Sitoh Yi Pin has been the Member of Parliament for Potong Pasir SMC since 2011.

The constituency's most famous MP is opposition leader Chiam See Tong when People's Action Party candidate Mah Bow Tan (who is currently the Minister for National Development) lost to the former in the 1984 general election.

The seat is a hotly contested seat in the general elections. In the 2001 general election, Chiam See Tong won the seat by 751 votes to People's Action Party's Sitoh Yih Pin, clinching 52.4% of the votes. Chiam subsequently improved his winning margin to 55.8% in the 2006 general election.

The PAP gained the seat in 2011 when the party's Sitoh Yih Pin defeated Chiam's successor in Potong Pasir, Lina Loh Woon Lee, also Chiam's wife, but on a marginal percentage of 0.72%.
